Helium recovery system now online slashing consumption by 95%
The Lumigen Instrument Center's state-of-the-art helium recovery system is now fully operational at its Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Facility. This innovative system captures, purifies and stores helium for reuse, significantly reducing helium consumption across the facility.
The recovered helium will primarily support the NMR facility and can also be utilized in other instruments, including mass spectrometers. The system is expected to reduce the center's helium consumption to just 30 liters per year—a 95% decrease.
The project was made possible through funding from the National Science Foundation (grant number NSF 2303622), underscoring the importance of sustainable practices in scientific research.
